Do I need to use your email service to use efax?
No. Users of any email system can use OwnMail’s email to fax service, including but not limited to Lotus Notes, MS Exchange, CC: Mail, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, Pine, Outlook, Web email such as Hotmail, Yahoo etc.
I use your VoIP service - How do I subscribe?
You already have. VoIP users can just begin to send faxes. The charges are deducted from their accounts on success at the special rate applicable for email to fax. You can set your fax preferences in your VoIP console.
I use your email service - How do I subscribe?
The admin account can automatically use or share its credit for email to fax. For other users, usually a company subscribes by establishing credit for each individual. An administrator (usually some one from the accounts department) can be created for the purposes of email to fax. This person can establish credit in the accounts of other users for email to fax. This person can also access reports on usage and billing. As soon as the credit is established in a users account, that user can immediately begin sending fax messages, or even forwarding his own incoming email to a fax number (in case he is going some place where he cannot read his mail but can receive faxes). Individuals can also establish credit in their own accounts under “Options/Credit Management” in their web mail interface.
I dont use your services – How do I subscribe?
The company or the individual can set up an email account under mail.ownmail.com, which he uses solely for the purposes of email to fax services. He does not have to use the other email services. He can continue send faxes from his current email system. The delivery reports and receipts will also be sent to his current email address.

The subscriber can share his account by including the email addresses of the other users in his preferences, eliminating the need to establish separate accounts for each user. The user must use that email address only to send faxes. The system automatically keeps track of who has sent faxes and to where.

Should you want additional security, OwnMail will provide you with a digital signature, which you must include with the message to be faxed. By sharing the digital signature, the account may be shared by many employees. However, in this situation, if the digital signature ever needs to be changed, then all users sharing the signature will have to be notified by you.
Does the fax seem as if it is coming from you?
No, there is no indication that the fax is coming from us. Only your (sender) address is mentioned.
How do I send faxes from OwnMail's web interface?
Just type the sender's fax number instead of the sender's email address while composing the message, followed by "@fax.now". E.g. if the fax number is 1-212-8937899, then type 12128937899@fax.now in place of the sender's email address. Its that simple. You can type in a message directly in the compose box, or attach documents of virtually any type, or even do both, in which case the message typed in the compose box goes as a sort of cover sheet for the fax.
How do I send faxes from other email software?
Type the sender's fax number instead of the sender's email address while composing the message, followed by something like "@mail001.fax.ownmail.com" (the exact postfix will be given to you at the time of subscription). If you have chosen to use digital signatures, you must attach that with the message that has to be faxed. Everything else remains the same. You can type in a message directly in the compose box, or attach documents of virtually any type, or even do both, in which case the message typed in the compose box goes as a sort of cover sheet for the fax.
What attachments can be sent as faxes?
Virtually all common file types are supported, and more types are continually being added to the list. The following is the current set of attachments supported: -

  • Word Documents: '.doc', '.dot', '.rtf'.
  • Excel Sheets: '.xls', '.xl*', '.csv', '.dbf', '.dif', '.wq1', '.slk', '.pab', '.wk*, '.*qy'.
  • Powerpoint Presentations: '.ppt', '.pp*', '.pot'.
  • HTML Documents: '.htm', '.html', '.mht'.
  • Image Files: '.tif', '.gif', '.jpg'.
  • Acrobat files: '.pdf'.
How am I charged?
You are charged only for successful transmissions. You are charged per second of connection time while delivering the fax to the destination fax machine. The rate per minute (which is divided by 60 to get the rate per second) differs for various destinations. Please see the tariff for further details. All charges are detailed in your online console.
How is your service different from PC-to-Fax?
Our service is a true email to fax service, in that there is no fax software to be loaded on every computer sending faxes. PC-to-fax services require some software and a print driver to be installed and maintained on every computer sending faxes. This can be very difficult and expensive to do if more than 5 computers are sending faxes.
I want to receive faxes and get it in my inbox.
This feature is not available.
Why should I send faxes? Will fax not die out as telex did?
Often it is felt that fax will be replaced by email as a form of telecommunication as more and more people get an email address. This however is not borne out by the experience of advanced telecommunication markets, where use of fax is increasing even though email access has almost become universal. The reason for this is the fact that the two mediums convey different levels of urgency. World over, there is a system of an office-boy delivering a fax right to center of the table of the recipient. Usually a fax can draw a response within 10 minutes. On the other hand, email messages may not be read for hours, and in some cases may be read only the next day. Therefore, unless you know that the recipient reads his email many times a day, urgent messages should be sent by fax, even if the recipient has an email address.

Telex was replaced by fax because fax had the same urgency level of telex, as well as the added advantage of being able to carry graphics. Email does not convey the same urgency as fax, and thus fax usage is still robust.
